DAVID, THE UNSUNG MUSIC HERO

DAVID, THE UNSUNG MUSIC HERO
David Mabhena

His name alludes to the biblical hero, the shepherd who became king David; the greatest musician that ever walked upon the face of the earth. Today we meet another David; a Pastor who happens to sing Jazz secular music. His bass guitar is his best harp which has made room for him before the greatest gospel musicians like Mkhululi Bhebhe, Ayanda Shange, Ntokozo & Nqubeko Mbatha, Eric Moyo among others.  David Mabhena is his name.

WHAT'S ALL IN THE NAME DAVID?

"David Mabhena is my name. Some call me Mreve, others call me Reverend. Mreve refers to someone who speaks revelations. I'm a singer, bassist, producer and a junior pastor as well." He  comes from Emganwini in the City of Kings.

WHAT HE HAS EXPERIENCED AS A JAZZ MUSICIAN AND PASTOR

"I have learnt  a lot of things as a gospel and a secular musician. Some experiences have cost me friendships and relationships. Fortunately I've managed to redeem a few of those. Artists have a tendency of giving late payments or payments at all."

THE CONGREGANT'S RECEPTION OF HIS MUSIC

"They love my ministration at church. When I'm at church I don't just sing or perform, I minister. The challenge with most church singers is that they focus on being the main people instead of giving God his place."

HIS GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS IN MUSIC

"I have done two state recordings with 8 tracks each. I have played for Vocal Ex, Mkhululi Bhebhe,  Ayanda Shange, Ntokozo & Nqubeko Mbatha, Eric Moyo, Sicelo Moya, and I have had the privilege to play for Pastor  William Mc Dowell."

HIS WORK AS A PASTOR

"I can't say it's fun because ministry is hard. You have to seperate yourself for the work of the kingdom. If you hear anyone say it's nice they will be doing it for themselves and not the kingdom of God."

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM HIM

"Be on the lookout for  my gospel tracks and my single love song."

HAD HE NOT BEEN A PASTOR AND MUSICIAN?

"I would do construction, road works, renovations or electricals."

THE SECRET RECIPE FOR HIS SUCCESS

"Be yourself, love and fear God, be happy always and don't forget to pray. Have a forgiving heart at all times. Love and learn to move on. A lot of destinies are stuck because people are holding on to the past."
